U.Dance First Timers
17th February 2011

StopGAP Youth Company perform at their first U.Dance event this year, and give the South East event its first performance by an integrated dance company.
The main performance company describe themselves as “... a dance company that challenges traditional notions about dance by using each dancer's physical and intellectual potential as a starting point for creating new work. We work from a philosophy of physical, psychological and social integration.”
Eighteen months ago, a new youth-focussed company was established, we spoke to Lead Apprentice, Anna Pearce before she jetted off to run a company project in Albania:
“It started a couple of years ago as project in Surrey, the participants then became involved in further educational work and we now have a strong core group that is growing all the time”
“Members of the group have motivation and drive to develop the dance skills which they already have. Our first performance was last year in February when we performed with the main StopGAP company at the City of London festival”
Company apprentice, Hannah adds:
“The Youth Company members are Dermot; Nick; Sarah; Gordon; Oliver; Lana; Emma and Nathan. We work together every week on a Wednesday evening during term time, trying to get the best out of each individual performer whilst working within their abilities.
Our U.Dance-South East piece is about identity, taking the dancers through their lives and their future to reach for their dreams.
We started making the piece in October 2010 working in weekly sessions and it was finished in December so they are now polishing the piece and getting ready for their first performance at U.Dance.“
U.Dance South East is on Sunday 20th March at Frensham Heights, Surrey.
